A Need For Friends

Ronda wrote a very good post over at Please, Don’t Judge Me. She expresses a fear that we all face when we are about to make a shift towards fully following Christ.

What a God we serve. Why am I afraid? Why am I worried about what tomorrow holds? I have said goodbye to those I love and have been in a dark place. Yet I am still afraid of rejection, name calling, standing out. How can I change people and the world if I cry alone in the corners? How can my voice be heard if I don’t stand up and shout? Why am I content to scream out in my home, car, church but not in the streets? How can I change the world if I cannot change myself?

Yes we need to make that jump, and we need that support from our friends and family. That’s the thing, we can’t do it on our own, that’s why we are afraid. God knows this, he knows that we need support from our friends and fellow believers. Jesus created community with his disciples. They depended on eachother. When Jesus sent out the twelve, he sent them two by two. He did not send them on their own.

Mark 6:7
Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village. 7Calling the Twelve to him, he sent them out two by two and gave them authority over evil[a] spirits.

It is a very real fear we all have with any aspect of life, no matter how old we are. We do not want to be alone, we do not want to be rejected. If we are going to make a step to follow Christs teachings and actually go into the community and be as Christ was, there will be friends of ours that will not want to follow. They may even turn their backs on us. And it at this time we need to cling to God and look to others who are moving in the same direction as us. And ultimately we need to be the example for those friends who may not be ready.

We need to make that step. God is moving and he doesn’t need us, he wants us. If we don’t step up… he will find someone else.
